Utility locating prior to any excavation project has been a legally mandated requirement since 1998. But we’ve always gone above and beyond, because safe and accurate utility locating is more than just checking boxes.
What to expect from a Stake CenterSM Locate
Step 1: 811 & service provider are notified
- Excavator contacts 811 and reports upcoming excavation plans
- Utility providers in the area receive notice of excavation plans from 811, then information is passed along to the designated utility locating service provider (Stake Center)
Step 2: Locating ticket is sent
- A locator nearby receives an electronically dispatched ticket
- Tickets are assigned based on location and the amount of locate requests in the locator’s system
Step 3: Locate in progress
- Locator evaluates the site and uses specialized technical equipment and software to identify and map underground infrastructure
- Locator marks location and type of underground utility with colored lines, flags, or both
Step 4: Locate recorded and billed
- Locator writes technical documentation detailing the completed locate
- Locate expires after 14–21 days (varies by state) and may need to be re-located
